Every great love story has phases — the spark, the magic, the confusion, the heartbreak, and the unexpected rebound. Our relationship with hashtags is no different. Let’s take a look back at how we went from #obsessed to #overit and where we’re headed next.
#TheRelationship ❤️
It all began in 2007, when a former Google employee suggested on Twitter that the pound symbol could help group related tweets. Little did we know it would spark a decade-long digital romance.
By 2009, Twitter officially embraced the trend by hyperlinking hashtags, transforming them into searchable, clickable threads of conversation.
Then came the expansion. In 2011, Instagram adopted hashtags and turned them into a discovery engine. A way for users and brands alike to be found in an ever-growing visual universe.
#TheHoneymoonPhase 💐
Life was good. Instagram allowed up to 30 hashtags in a caption, and the hashtag cloud was born.
Creators experimented with every approach: a stack of hashtags nestled neatly in the first comment, a cloud placed right below the caption, minimalist versions, maximalist versions — the options were endless.
And for a while, the results spoke for themselves.
#TheRedFlags 🚩
But then… the mixed signals started.
Engagement slipped. Features quietly disappeared.
Instagram removed the ability to follow hashtags.
The “Recents” tab vanished from hashtag pages.
And the Instagram CEO? He flip-flopped, noting hashtags don’t help reach, wait they do, actually they don’t… It was giving “red flag.”
The magic was fading.
#TheBreakup 💔
We decided it was time to test our relationship.
We ran trial Reels — simple A/B tests with and without hashtags — and the results were undeniable. Hashtags weren’t increasing reach. They weren’t helping impressions. They weren’t changing performance at all.
Then came the final confirmation: Instagram officially announced that hashtags no longer help boost reach. The algorithm no longer uses hashtag keywords to distribute content.
And just like that, the breakup became official.
#TheRebound 🌟
But as every good rebound teaches us, the end of one relationship makes space for something new.
Instagram content is now discoverable on Google Search. Eligible posts, Reels, and videos can appear in public search results, even for people who don’t follow us, and even for people who don’t have Instagram.
That means a wider audience, new pathways to discovery, and a fresh opportunity to boost visibility where people are already searching.
#ThePowerCouple 🔥
So, what are we doing about it? We’re embracing the upgrade.
Across our accounts, we’ve implemented a full optimization refresh. This isn’t just a rebound, it’s the new relationship standard.
Search-optimized content + strong creative = the power couple we’ve been waiting for.
In the end, hashtags had their moment, but we’ve evolved. As Instagram shifts into a search-first discovery era, we’re not just adapting, we’re thriving. Here’s to creating content that not only engages but gets found.
