Located in the hamlet of Ronkonkoma on Long Island, Station Square is comprised of diverse retail, residential, and commercial opportunities. Following its Phase I completion, Streetsense has supported TRITEC Real Estate Company’s goal to enhance the existing site by establishing a cohesive strategy for retail and open amenity spaces across the site.

Approach/

Station Square is situated adjacent to the Long Island Railroad, the busiest commuter railroad in the U.S. The site’s previous incarnation is an industrial complex of small manufacturing and automotive businesses. It’s transformed into a more walkable, vibrant, urban-like hub. Through the introduction of placemaking, planning, branding, and retail storefront strategies, a variety of activity zones were created to both enhance and energize the ground plane and create a central village within the site

Process/

The design process included context research and analysis to develop and establish a unique local identity distinguished from the surrounding area. Each outdoor space is defined by various seating, lighting, and landscaping with an emphasis on flexibility. These elements, along with a thorough review of each building façade, allowed Streetsense to develop a unified design approach between the existing and proposed design.

Branding/

A modern brand representing strength, resilience, and celebration of the local region was inspired by the site’s accessible central location on Long Island and rooted in its past life as an industrial complex. The tagline “Made on Long Island” inspires local pride while the bold direct design is confident and approachable. Designed with the local Long Islander in mind, Station Yards reimagines what it means to be made on Long Island.

Results/

Station Square supports the growing mixed-use nature and transit-oriented future of its residents and commuters connecting across Long Island. Phase II of the development is currently under construction; upon completion, it will provide visitors the ideal outdoor environment and the ultimate backdrop for a wide range of programming.
