Commercial District Recovery Guide

  • Insights

We’re excited to announce that we’ve authored a Commercial District Recovery Guide in partnership with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and with support from the U.S. Bank Foundationclick here to learn more and download.

Small businesses in communities nationwide are facing the risk of permanent closure — to help address these challenges, our recovery guide provides place-based organizations and intermediary partners focused on community economic development with a curated roadmap for action to support COVID-19 recovery efforts in downtowns and commercial districts.

Informed by our team’s decades of work with Chambers of Commerce, Merchants Associations, Main Street programs, Business Improvement Districts, and Community Development Corporations, the guide includes a range of strategies complemented by case studies from communities across the country that help address the needs of businesses both during the immediate aftermath of the pandemic and during recovery as the nation begins to emerge from social distancing measures and business closures.

As commercial districts begin to pivot towards emerging from the pandemic and state-wide orders are lifted, the guide provides intermediary groups with recommendations on how to:

+ Effectively communicate that districts are ‘Open for Business’

+ Conduct a comprehensive assessment of damage/impact of the pandemic to make the case for funding and resources

+ Adapt the public realm for social distancing

+ Provide guidance to businesses on new safety guidelines and ways to adapt commercial spaces for social distancing

Our top focus these past few months has been to help support clients, businesses, restaurants, hotels, commercial districts, and more — community is at the heart of what we do, and we hope these resources help communities in need. Click here to download the guide.
